Snow Tal Trek
The Sour Tal trek is a fascinating way of exploring the fauna, flora and
culture of the high Himalayas. The following places lie enroute:
Shaleen village: Situated amongst cedar trees, Shaleen offers
spectacular views of Khanaul and Chhika that lie at the base of the
Deo-Tibba peak. This village gets its name from the ancient temple of
Shandal Rishi, a place of great cultural significance in the area. The
local houses reflect the traditional Kulvi architecture, endowing the
village with a picturesque ambience.
Banara: is situated at 2100mts. An old temple dedicated to the
local god Thakshak Nag lies in the village. One can visit Arjun Gufa,
the historic cave where Arjun from Mahabharat is supposed to have taken
refuge during the Pandavas’ exile. The remnants of Raja Pitli’s fort, an
erstwhile ruler of Kullu, also lie close by.
Bran Phath: is a vista point and gives one an extended view of
Kullu, Chanderkhani Pass and the Manali valley.
Mahili Thach: is located on a grassy col on the ridge of the
Dhauladhar range. From the campsite, one can get an enchanting view of
the Dhauladhar range, Chhota Bhangal, Kaliheyni Pass and its lofty
mountain peaks. One also gets to admire the entire Kullu valley, the
distant snowcapped mountains of Chanderkhani Pass and the Fojhal valley.
Mahili Thach is also known for the local Gaddi shepherds, who graze
their herds of sheep on the vast grassy meadows below. You may even be
rewarded with a glimpse of an elusive bear!
Klount: also known as Koot in the local language, it is a
fertile, grassy meadow, earlier used for herding sheep and growing buck
wheat. This campsite is situated in the midst of apple orchards, a
welcoming sight on the downhill trudge.
