Kuala Lumpur :
Population : 1.6 million in 2006
Founded in 1857 as a tin miners’ settlement, this dazzling metropolis is
today one of Asia’s thriving mega cities. Situated at the confluence of
the Klang and Gombak rivers, Kuala Lumpur (or KL as it is locally
known) means ‘muddy confluence.’ It has come a long way since its sleepy
origins- contemporary KL is a shopper’s paradise, offering the
discerning shopper choices from designer labels to ethnic Malaysia-made
garments like batik and night markets. Here you can come across British
colonial buildings next to Islamic style Malay mosques and
glass-concrete skyscrapers. The inhabitants of the city also reflect
this motley of cultures. The three main ethnic groups are the Malays,
the Chinese and the Indians. The latter two groups were brought in
during colonial rule mainly as labor to work on the tin mines and rubber
plantations, respectively. Today, they enrich the cultural milieu and
enhance the vibrancy of the city, offering a plethora of cuisines,
attire, festivals and rituals. So experience KL, the confluence of
tradition and modernity.
Genting Highlands
Elevation 1,760 m (5,774 ft)
Known for its salubrious climate and crisp mountain air, this
hill-station is nestled in the Titiwangsa Mountains, and is home to the
famous Genting Highlands Resort. It is an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur
and is also accessible by South East Asia's longest cable car ride
(3.38km). In 2006, the Guinness Book of World Records listed Genting’s
First World Hotel as the world's largest hotel with a total of 6,118
rooms. Due to its year-round pleasant climate (16-24 c) and misty
ambience, Genting enjoys high visitation from all over the world.
It also provides entertainment for all ages and interests- cinemas,
boutiques, restaurants, cafes, concerts, food courts, concerts, indoor
and outdoor theme parks, as well as a snow park.
Taman Negara
Taman Negara means National Park in Malay. Designated as a protected
area in 1938 (then known as King George V National Park), it has a total
area of 4,343 sq km. Gunung Tahan (2187m), the highest point of the
Malay Peninsula, lies within Taman Negara.
A fascinating fact about this tropical jungle is that it is supposed to
be 130 million years old, the oldest in the world. The forest is also
known for its abundant bird and insect life. It is a botany lover’s
paradise, with wide varieties ranging from luminescent fungi to
rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, to orchids, ferns and ancient
trees. Taman Negara is home to over 10,000 plant species, 150,000
insects, 675 birds and over 270 reptiles. You might see long tailed
macaques swinging from tree to tree or monitor lizards basking in the
sun by the river.
Among Taman Negara’s original inhabitants is the Batek group of
Orang-Asli (indigenous people). Traditionally, they led a nomadic
lifestyle in the forests, hunting game with blowpipes and darts poisoned
with tree sap. Contemporary Bateks lead a more or less settled
existence. Once found throughout inland peninsular Malaysia, today they
are confined to the interiors of Taman Negara.
