Acclimatization

A passenger may suffer discomfort if the height gain during travel is very rapid. Typically a person will complain of headache, nausea, breathlessness etc. Going down to a lower altitude is probably the best cure. Plenty of rest, short acclimatizing walks and allowing sufficient time for the body to adjust to the rarefied atmosphere certainly help. Certain medicines are useful, please consult your doctor.

Height gain is extremely rapid when one flies into Leh from the plains. A full day rest is strongly recommended after such a flight. A jeep safari via Manali has the definite advantage of gradual height gain and low discomfort. You will also relish the rugged beauty of high mountain passes on the way to Leh.
