Kanha National Park

Kanha National park is located in the Banjar and Halon valleys in the Mandla / Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh. The habitat is chiefly sal and mixed deciduous forest. Kanha’s valleys are enveloped by hilltop plateaus, locally known as dadar. Bamni dadar is one of the tourist- frequented spots for the views that it offers.

Kanha was created in 1974 under the auspices of Project Tiger, a nation-wide government-led conservation program for the Royal Bengal Tiger. The entire national park area of 940 sq. kms. has been demarcated as a "core zone," free from all biotic disturbances. A buffer zone of 1009 sq. kms. surrounding the core zone has been categorized as a "multiple use area." For better management, the park is divided into 5 ranges; Kisili, Kanha, and Mukki in the western block and Bhaisanghat and Supkhar in the eastern sector, the latter two being closed to the public. The Kanha Tiger Reserve is a part of the Gondwana tract inhabited traditionally by the Gond and Baiga tribes. Today there are nearly 155 villages in the buffer zone and over 255 villages within the radius of 10km.
